Choose Markdown templates for your workflow

Choose GitHub Markdown templates for README files, changelogs, and contribution guides. Use Markdown templates for documentation for API references, design proposals, and blog posts. For everyday work, start with Markdown templates for notes and planning; for a job application, try the Markdown resume template.

These Markdown templates include complete document structures and sample content. Replace the placeholders, remove sections you don’t need, and preview the result in the Markdown Viewer before sharing.

How to use Markdown templates

  1. Pick a template that matches the document you need, then click "Preview template".
  2. Open it in the editor with "Use template", or copy the Markdown into your own tool.
  3. Replace the placeholders — names, dates, links, and example rows — and delete sections you don't need.
  4. Save or export it as a .md file, or convert it with Markdown to PDF, Markdown to Word, or Markdown to HTML.

Need to look up a piece of syntax while you edit? The Markdown cheat sheet covers every element, and the Markdown table generator builds tables for you. To check how a README renders on GitHub, use the GitHub README viewer.

Markdown templates FAQ

What is a Markdown template?
A Markdown template is a pre-structured .md file with headings, tables, lists, and placeholder text already in place. Instead of starting from a blank page, you copy the template and replace the placeholders with your own content.
How do I use Markdown templates?
Preview a template, then click "Use template" to open it in the Markdown Viewer with a live preview, or use "Copy" to paste it into GitHub, VS Code, Obsidian, or Notion. "Download .md" saves the file with a sensible name such as README.md or CHANGELOG.md.
Where do GitHub issue and pull request templates go?
Put issue templates in .github/ISSUE_TEMPLATE/ (for example .github/ISSUE_TEMPLATE/bug_report.md) and the pull request template at .github/pull_request_template.md. GitHub picks them up automatically on the default branch.
What is the YAML block at the top of some templates?
That block between --- lines is front matter. Static site generators (Hugo, Jekyll, Astro), Obsidian, and GitHub issue templates read it as metadata such as title, date, tags, or labels. Delete it if your tool does not use it.
Can I turn a Markdown template into a PDF or Word document?
Yes. Open the template in the editor, fill it in, and export it with the Markdown to PDF or Markdown to Word tools. This works well for resumes, reports, and meeting notes.
Are these templates free to use?
Yes. These Markdown templates are free to copy, modify, and use in personal or commercial projects without attribution.

Start from a blank page instead?

Write Markdown with a live preview, then export it as HTML, PDF, or Word.
